If you happen to be up around Kings Trail Rides in Kealakekua you are in luck. You can stop in and select some feathers for yourself. Iris Lambert is there and she makes fabulous hat bands as well as feather pins or barretts. She knows how to put just the right colors together and uses glass to give more accent to the center of pins. This glass is lamp work and stained glass. The image attached will give you some idea.
You can contact Iris at 323-3653 or go to this web site to see more: http://www.hawaiiart.com/feather-lei/

Whew, there has been a floodgate open that released a lot of sadness in our country. Time for healing and change. I’m sooo ready for the inaguration of Obama and can’t wait another day to start celebrating. So here is my wreath in honor of an era of change we are about to enter.

This is a new venue, the South Kona Green Market in Captain Cook at the Amy Greenwell Garden, just opposite the Big Island Art Farm and Manago Hotel. Time: 9:00 to 2:00. There are many artists who set up their easels and plenty of their work which is, of course, for sale. The fun is that you can hang out there, learn from them, soak up the music and taste the food and drinks in a wonderland environment. It feels so friendly that most people come to get a taste of what community really should be; lots of sharing. The market is, first of all, bringing the farmers and their products to the public. There is a huge overlap of sensitivity. I see that people who care about the land and what they want for food also care about what they create in the way of artistic clothing, furniture, and all that we use and enjoy. Their web site will give you specific names an web site links. Click on the name above.
Come and meet the community of super people. I’ll be there giving out copies of Big Island Arts Annual.

We have been bombarded with news of breakdowns all around our world. This makes me ask, who can bring the spotlight around to a positive direction? Answer: people who focus on the magic of creating- Artists - that’s who!
Take some time to enjoy art and you’ll feel a brightness. You could treat yourself and your family with a gift of sharing some art together by going to shoe shows, galleries, museums, studios or making art together. This could become contagious; that will cause us to call in healthy.
Aloha

You’ll want your very own copy to enjoy.
We are happy to bring you the 2009 edition of Big Island Arts Annual with the cover painting by Thomas Deir.
One of the reasons you need your own copy is so that you can open the cover and see the image as it continues onto the back of the book. If you live in Hawaii you know there are sunsets that are truly this dramatic in color. Our book gives you the opportunity to contemplate the wonders of subtropical islands. Then open the book to the 50 pages of more superb art. Great vibes!

Nora Yamanoha is showing some of the ideas that are coming from the students in the classes at Donkey Mill in Holualoa. Jump down two entries and I’ve given the details for those who want to get into these classes which are starting. No problem if you see this late. They will find time to help you catch up. Just gotta be ready to get your hands into the mushy wet stuff and enjoy like you did when you were a kid.

Or should I say history communicated through quilt designs. In case you are in Santa Clara, California this October (16-19th) you can go to the Pacific International Quilt Festival to see two quilts by Big Island artist, Rozemaryn van der Horst. One quilt gives a view of the haunting Flying Dutchman; the ship that sailors didn’t want to see. This quilt is featured on a full page in the 2009 Big Island Arts Annual which is being printed right Now and should be available by early November.
The other quilt I’m giving you a thumb nail view of here. It celebrates the history of transportation modes in blue on white. The center is a very detailed image of two mechanics putting an engine in a car.
