Artists who are at the South Kona Green Market are a big part of the experience every Sunday.  This is currently located on a grassy hillside just off the highway in Captain Cook. There are plenty of signs posted to help you be aware that you really do want to stop, sample the tastes, get into the music, and buy till you find your produce bags overflowing.  It’s a great people time. Locals get into discussions with visitors over the nuances of Hawaii chocolate, coffee, hand painted clothes by Shary Crocker…. you’ll see. You can also pick up a copy of 2010 Big Island Arts Annual if you don’t have your own copy yet.  The image on their new card is by Jamie Gilmore, a botanical portraitist. On Wednesday Jamie and Shary are at the Naalehu Farmers Market.  If you have some great photos from either market please send me some featuring the artists.

The Paradise Artist Collective already had a tour in December. You could see their work by going to each studio.  I met JoDee Schumer, Patti Pease-Johnson and Marian Fieldson that day. Their work with texture and color of rich fabrics and Marian’s fused glass was fabulous! All the artists involved in this tour donated a portion of their profits to a local school.

If you missed that tour you are still in luck.  This same group is packing up their art to bring it to Wailoa Art Center in Hilo from January 8th to 28th. This give you plenty of time to plan a day that fits in to your plans soon after the new year. You might want to go to Wailoa for the  opening reception 5 to 7pm January 8th. 

I’m not a candy bar but I AM Mars and I have a wish for you all to enjoy the shift of energy that comes with our concept of a change in the year. How funny that we set a date for the change when the change is fluid and moment by moment. Artists know this. The flow of energy is the very river they live inside/outside/all sides. The FLOW is the electric current that makes magic happen. So, I wish you the very best energy as every moment comes before you.

So much is happening on the Big Island over the holiday season. I’m posting the events at Living Arts Gallery.This covers what they are offering up to January 15th.

It is worth the trip to go there and meet and enjoy the vitality of their artist group.  I wish I lived closer or had a magic carpet ride.

Hawaii is a place for finding artists. Many studios are opened to the public before the holidays for shopping along with the chance to get to know artists.   If you are going to be around the East side of the Big Island December 5th or 6th you can get your map from the Paradise Studio Tour website http://www.paradisestudiotour.com and head out towards Pahoa to see any of the 15 studios.  The options multiply well beyond the 15 studios as the whole group is actually 36 different artists involved. Thank goodness there are two days, 10AM to 4PM each day.

Maybe you should just take your special friends along and give them the opportunity to pick out their own gift(s)

and you get to help the island of artists have a great year!

The chance to meet a special group of Artists from the area of Volcano Village is being offered to you starting Friday, Nov. 27. So I consider it a golden day of opportunity. They are available again Saturday and Sunday.The hours are 10AM to 4PM.  Just get to the village and pick up a card with the map and details on the kind of art as well as the name of each artist participating.   May the weather spirits cooperate so that walking from place to place can be enjoyable.  See you there!

I’ve been talking about the 2010 Big Island Arts Annual as it has so much new  for you to enjoy. Yet, our previous issues are chock full of wonderful artists and information as well. Hold on to your copies, these are “keepers.”

Last month, in order to meet with our public we soaked up some hot sun  on Alii Drive during the Village Stroll. We were partnering with Barbara Garcia Bowman, Co-Publisher of Ke Ola Magazine. The location, you may notice, is right in front of the gate at Hulihee Palace. This

is where you can find Barb every month and sometimes Alexis and yours truly, Mars.

We have had the pleasure of creating our third Big Island Arts Annual and it is on the way here.  We will be distributing them around the island as soon as they land.  You can get your copy and go shopping for the holidays because it will be here by early November.

We have GOLD.  The new Arts Annual has just gone to print.  I’m comparing this event to NASA going to the moon for water.

We have such a stunning new edition for 2010 that it is going to influence the world of art consciousness for our island. I’ve been so focused on the new edition that I have neglected this blog for the last month. We are beginning to create the pages of the 2010 Big Island Arts Annual.  We have to start early as it goes out to the public in November. Some people are eager to buy art for special gifts. Our 2010 edition will be ready to help with the selection of great art from the artists and galleries of the island of Hawai’i.  Many changes have come to the island since our 2009 publication. Artists who are wise come to the Big Island and find their magical place to create and then, ta da- exhibit.  This can be the most tricky part. Hawi is a magical village and it draws many art minded people.  The new art cooperative that is opeing is sure to draw many people to their doors not only for the opeing but all year through.  Enjoy the energy and the good food at restaurants nearby like Sushi Rock that is a kind of edible art.

Alalā Comes Home by Elizabeth Miller

Volcano School  of Arts & Sciences is holding its 6th Annual Art Auction & Mother’s Day Champagne Brunch at the Cooper Center in Volcano Village on Saturday the 9th of May from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm.

EHCC Spring 2009 Exhibition First Place Winner, Elizabeth Miller’s  ‘Alalā Comes Home will be featured; it is tooled aluminum, cast resin and sticks 2″ deep, that can stand alone so that light comes through the cast resin “window” or be hung on a wall.

Tickets are $20 advance, $25 door, or $10 for contributing artists and can be purchased at Volcano School 985-9800, Volcano General Store, or Volcano Garden Arts.  Ages 21 and over.  For more information or to contribute artwork, contact Marilyn Hiestand, 985-8526/928-1908 or Annabelle Lewis, 985-8703.

If you happen to be up around Kings Trail Rides in Kealakekua you are in luck. You can stop in and select some feathers for yourself. Iris Lambert is there and she makes fabulous hat bands as well as feather pins or barretts. She knows how to put just the right colors together and uses glass to give more accent to the center of pins. This glass is lamp work and stained glass.  The image attached will give you some idea.

Whew, there has been a floodgate open that released a lot of sadness in our country. Time for healing and change. I’m sooo ready for the inaguration of Obama and can’t wait another day to start celebrating. So here is my wreath in honor of an era of change we are about to enter.
