Fire and Ice Quilt Show

15 Feb

The Honaunau organization, SKEA  is opening a two day quilt show at their main building this weekend, Feb. 18-19 from 9AM to 5PM and to 3PM on Sunday.  The title is most likely influenced by the awesome contrasts of climate that the Big Island can boast about.  Then again, perhaps Robert Frost’s well known poem may be part of the story.

One of the exhibitors is Rozemaryn van der Horst.  Her work has been in issues of Big Island Arts Annual as well as in the current Art Hawaii app available in the iTunes store. She explained that her quilt, Birds in Winter, was inspired by a trip to a small island in the Netherlands which had a lighthouse and the island’s only inhabitants were the lighthouse keeper and his wife.  The image from years ago left a lasting impression.  The ice part is more like snow. Then again, some years turning into burr, ice.

SKEA is located on Mamalahoa Hwy. between mile markers 106 & 105.  Enjoy meeting the quilters and visitors.  SKEA sponsors many kinds of art so get to know them if you want to get involved in a community group.

Cosmic Energy Visible in Quilts

10 Apr

The quilt display at the Hualalai Learning Theatre in the headquarters of W. M. Keck Observatory in Waimea has just come down. Many people enjoyed the magical images and more wanted to.  The first purpose of the space at W. M. Keck Headquarters is for the business of astronomy and is not always available for visitors.  I’m giving you a cost effective way to see the full display of the quilts devoted to the theme of astronomy and nature from the Big Island perspective.  I’ll keep you posted if the quilts are displayed again at another venue so that you can get the full impact of the detail involved in their creation. Quilters, you are welcome to add to this entry.  Send us your background stories.
